Melanin is a pigment prominent in skin & hair coloration. It is responsible for skin darkening in response to sun exposure, in particular UV wavelengths (UVB) in the 280 to 315 nm range.
Note the large numbers of double bonds in this molecule. These are responsible for trapping UV photons. This type of structure is also seen in sunscreens such as para aminobenzoic acid (PABA).
