Memantine consists of an amino group (-NH2) with a hydrogenated carbon lattice structure that bears a striking resemblance to our diamond molecular model. Memantine is a derivative of 1-aminoadamantane & N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) a receptor antagonist used in the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s. Memantine's mechanism is believed to be the blocking of excessive activity of the neurotransmitter glutamate which is implicated in the damage of nerve cells.
