What is Ascorbic Acid?

It is an important dietary factor that humans and other primates cannot synthesize. It is also known as Vitamin C. Ascorbic acid is derived from the Latin "scorbutus" meaning scurvy. This condition was frequently seen in sailors who did not have access to fresh fruit which is an important dietary source of Vitamin C.
