A polyene, beta-carotene is a cyclic carotene and a carotenoid beta-end derivative. Its molecular structure is characterized by a chain of conjugated double bonds similar to alkenes. It also contains beta-ionone/cyclohexenyl (a cleavage product of beta-carotene), which itself is similar in structure to some terpenoids.They are ubiquitous in nature playing roles in photosynthesis, as antioxidants & a variety of physiological functions.
