Ethanolamine is produced by an exothermic reaction caused by reacting ethylene oxide and aqueous ammonia. It has an ammonia-like smell, is a colourless liquid, and acts as a weak base. It is both a primary alcohol and a primary amine. Ethanolamine is produced commercially for a variety of reasons including emulsifiers for soap, wax removers, gas purification (removing CO2 from flue gas), corrosion inhibitors, and as an ingredient in wood preservative formulations.

Certain phospholipids, substances found in biological membranes, include Ethanolamine. An example is Phosphatidylethanolamine, which is found in all living cells!
