A key feature of pinhole optical systems is that they do not use a lens to focus. The tiny aperture of the pinhole gives the system nearly an infinite depth of field. The downside is less light throughput so longer exposure time is required. The optimum pinhole size ranges from 0.2 to 1.00 mm which is dependent primarily on the focal length, i.e. distance from the pinhole or the eye aperture light sensor a camera (e.g. film) or an eye (retina).
This sample pack includes 10 stainless steel pins each of 10 sizes to create different pinholes. In effect, you can do a physics & a biology experiment together.
Pinhole eyes are generally seen in animals that have evolved where detecting basic movement or changes in light is more important than having sharp vision. This simplicity of this eye design allows for basic image formation without the need for lenses, but it comes at the cost of low light sensitivity and limited image sharpness.
