Melanosis coli

Melanosis coli is a disorder in the pigmentation of the colon (intestinal) wall. This can be caused by excessive use of laxatives but is not considered dangerous otherwise. The condition is revealed through use of the Periodic Acid Schiff stain which binds to increased amounts of polysaccharides and glycoproteins in the mucosa (other layer) of the colon.
