Alpha linolenic acid, also known as ALA, is an 18 carbon polyunsaturated omega 3 fatty acid. It consists of a 17 carbon aliphatic (alkene) portion with three cis double bonds at the carbon 6, 9 and 15 positions and a carboxylic acid functional group. The double bonded carbon at position 15 is 3rd from the end methyl or omega carbon hence its structural designation of 18:3, lipid number of n3 or simply omega 3. Dietary sources of ALA include oils extracted from seeds such as flax, canola & soybeans. ALA is considered an essential fatty acid since humans cannot make this vital structural component of cell membranes.
Indigo Instruments has maintained a substantial inventory of genuine Cochranes of Oxford (Orbit) parts for 30+ years and are compatible with every molecular model kit we have sold. This level of quality may appear expensive but no parts support from other vendors costs even more.
Use our 3D Molecular Model Builder in Orbit-flexible mode to view the alpha linolenic acid structural version shown at the top in the image & build with the parts in this kit. This version can also be built with our 68827W organic chemistry student set & 68847W organic chemistry class set.
The version below it, is done as Orbit x-peg and you will need extra parts (see below) or use our 68849W biochemistry class molecular model set.
