Oleic acid is an 18 carbon monosaturated omega 9 fatty acid consisting of a 17 carbon aliphatic (alkene) portion with a single cis double bond at the carbon 9 position and a carboxylic acid functional group. The lone double bonded carbon at position 9 is 9th from the end methyl or omega carbon hence its structural designation of 18:1 cis-9 or simply omega 9.
