Palmitic acid is a 16 carbon saturated fatty acid with a lipid number of 16:0. It consists of a 15 carbon straight chain aliphatic portion (alkane) and a carboxylic acid functional group. It is primarily a plant metabolite found in palm oil, butter, cheese, milk, cocoa butter, soybean and sunflower oils as well as some meats. It is also an important fat component in mammalian milk.
