Vitamin A's structure can be described as an isoprenoid, a polyunsaturated molecule derived from isoprene units that form a hydrocarbon chain with conjugated double bonds that terminates at C15 with an alcohol functional group. Alternatively, beta-ionone ring attached to a conjugated polyene chainand terminating in an alcohol group. It can be represented as CH3−(CH2)2−CH=CH−CH=CH−CH=CH−CH2−CH2−CH−OH.
Retinol & its derivatives have several important biological roles. Retinal is a component of rhodopsin, one of several compounds that allow for light perception. Retinoic acid regulates transcription of genes important to to cell differentiation and growth. Vitamin A assists in immune responses that require epithelial tissue integrity.

Retinal has an aldehyde (-CHO) that replaces the alcohol at the terminal carbon. The aldehyde of retinoic acid (carboxylic acid form) is oxidized to form a carboxylic acid functional group (-COOH). A retinol ester, retinyl palmitate, is found in the liver as the storage form of vitamin A.
