Wurtzite is a a polymorph of zinc sulfide with a hexagonal (HCP) symmetry in its crystal structure. This molecular model kit has 151 atoms that can clearly show the tetrahedral shape of the that results from repeat ABAB stacking pattern. The alternating Zn and O layers create polar surfaces along the c-axis which creates its piezoelectric and pyroelectric properties which are important to its use in sensors, actuators, and catalysis.
Indigo Instruments has maintained a substantial inventory of genuine Cochranes of Oxford (Orbit) parts for 30+ years and are compatible with every molecular model kit we have sold. This level of quality may appear expensive but no parts support from other vendors costs even more.
The wurtzite structure is also found in silver iodide (AgI), zinc oxide (ZnO), cadmium sulfide (CdS), cadmium selenide (CdSe), silicon carbide (α-SiC), gallium nitride (GaN), aluminium nitride (AlN), boron nitride (w-BN) as well as being similar to lonsdaleite (hexagonal diamond).
