Chlorine dioxide is an effective disinfectant and quickly kills viruses, bacteria such as Staph. aureus & Bacillus atrophaeus and parasitic protozoa such as Giardia sp. by disrupting cell membranes & protein synthesis. It is under review as a surface sanitizer for E. coli O157:H7 and drug-resistant Salmonella sp. and virucide for HIV and Hepatitis A.
