Chlorine dioxide, when used on food-contact surfaces at diluted levels as low as 5 ppm, has shown bactericidal effects in well under the standard 30 minute study periods. Concentrations as low as 0.5ppm are effective against Legionella sp. & Giardia sp. in hot water systems.

When chlorine dioxide solutions are used to wash fruit & vegetables, this should be followed with a rinse of potable water to reduce residual levels to 3ppm or less.
