Hydrogen peroxide can improve seed viability and speed up germination. It acts as a disinfectant by ridding the seed surface of pathogens & may increase oxygen availability. Hydrogen peroxide may act as a redox signalling molecule & interact with plant hormones such as abscisic acid, gibberelic acid & ethylene.
Using the right concentration of hydrogen peroxide is essential. If have 30-35% food grade H2O2, first reduce it to 3% which is standard pharmaceutical grade. Our dilution calculator can assist in preparing different volumes & confirm with these strips. This will indirectly confirm that the start food grade peroxide has not degraded.
Prepare the soaking solution with a second 1:10 dilution which you can confirm using the 10,000ppm peroxide strips. Soak as follows:
Then rinse to remove residual peroxide.
All Indigo® hydrogen peroxide test strips come with a 3 year minimum guaranteed shelf life with full documentation including Certificate of Analysis, Stability & SDS; Certificate of Conformance on request. Be prepared for any health & safety audit or inspection. See Documentation below.
H2O2 functions as a signalling molecule in seed physiology in accordance with the known biology and biochemistry. However, the actual mechanism involved in peroxide soaks is complex. Blanket statements about speeding up all seed germination are unreliable since most plants are untested. Among the few that have been documented are rice, soybean & almonds. If you are working with seeds that germinate slowly, you will need to test what works.
Use 1-10% Indigo® test strips to confirm correct dilution of concentrated hydrogen peroxide, aka "food grade". These strips only change from white to black, with the concentration indicated by the speed of the color change. This timed response differs from the other peroxide strips which use color charts. These strips can experience a "lag time" before any color change is observed.
Concentration | Color Begins | Reaction Completion |
10% (100,000ppm) | 0 seconds | 3-5 seconds |
7% (70,000ppm) | 4 seconds | 7-12 seconds |
5% (50,000ppm) | 6 seconds | 14-18 seconds |
3% (30,000ppm) | 10 seconds (20) | 32-40 seconds (50) |
2% (20,000ppm) | 20 seconds (~40) | 53-65 seconds (~90-130) |
1% (10,000ppm) | 30 seconds (~75) | 100-130 seconds (~150-180) |

Excellent service! Product arrived in three days as expected. Item is very good for my various solutions of H2O2 concentrations. Saves a lot of calculations and guessing. Definitely keep them in mind for other items.
Once I figured out which end of the strips to use and when navy blue turned to black, I got the hang of it. If you're color blind, this product may be challenging. Using product to prepare rinse solutions.
As you've noted, these are more challenging than other strips but once you get a bit of practice, they're just as reliable. Use our Dilution Calculator first though so you know you are in the right range & the strips simply confirm you've done it right.
Great product and service! Package arrived from North America to NZ within a week during the covid-19 shut down period. Will be ordering more in near future. Thank you!
Happy to help our friends from Down Under!
I am quite happy with my purchase, the test strips do exactly what I need them to do. Price was quite fair and reasonable. Shipping was a bit slow but that is not your fault with the fiasco Covid-19 created. If I ever need a similar product I will most certainly look to Indigo Instruments to supply my need.
Thanks for the kind words.
Great for a quick check of H2O2 percentage. Have used for years for in-process redundancy testing and shelf life testing of finished goods.

Great to hear. Of course, you can take out all the guess work by using our Dilution Calculator. For more info, see also: Diluting Chlorine, Peroxide or Quat Sanitizers is Easy
