Typically, a paleontologist uses a dental pick to clean and prepare fossils by carefully removing small amounts of sediment or surrounding rock or soil without damaging the fossil itself. The dental pick allows for precision cleaning, especially around delicate bones of vertebrates or intricate structures of soft-bodies invertebrates. By gently scraping away layers of matrix, the preserved structures of the fossil can be gradually revealed.
